Tropical Cyclone Jasper crosses the coast near Wujal Wujal, north of Cairns

Tropical Cyclone Jasper has intensified to a category two system and slowly made landfall on Wednesday night, bringing with it large swells, storms and the risk of life-threatening flash flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said Jasper started crossing the coast around 3pm just south of Wujal Wujal near Cape Tribulation.

By 5pm, damaging wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour had affected coastal areas south of Cooktown, including Cairns.

At 7:45pm, the BOM said Jasper remained a category 2 system moving west at 11kph and was expected to weaken overnight.

At a media briefing in Townsville at 4pm, Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the eye of the cyclone would take several hours to cross the coast.

"The message to Cairns locals and those in the warning area is to take shelter now," Mr Miles said.

"Now is not the time to start moving around."

Earlier in the afternoon, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) issued an emergency warning for people from Cape Flattery to Cairns, urging them to take shelter immediately.

"Go immediately to the strongest, safest part of the building you are in," the QFES warning stated.

"This will be away from big windows. It could be a bathroom, walk-in wardrobe or hallway. Stay there."
